Titled "µƒ│ÒÇàÕ▒àÞ¥░µûÄþö╗ աɵÿÑÒÇÇÕ½üÕàÑÒü«ÕàÀ" this polychrome woodblock print by Ryuryukyo Shinsai captures the essence of traditional Japanese culture. Created in 1816 during the Year of the Rat, this privately published surimono print was commonly commissioned for individual poets and poetry groups to use as New Year greeting cards. The prints usually included witty thirty-syllable verses known as kyōka, inscribed alongside felicitous imagery connected to spring. Measuring 5 1/2 x 7 7/16 inches (14.189 cm), this intricate artwork beautifully combines ink and color on paper, showcasing Shinsai's mastery of woodblock printing techniques.
