EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue, a prominent German dramatist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born on February 16, 1761, in Lübeck, Kotzebue's literary career began in earnest in the 1780s, and he quickly rose to become one of the most influential figures in German theater. The image, taken from an anonymous English source, depicts Kotzebue in the prime of his life. He is shown wearing a high-collared coat, the fashionable attire of the era, and his short, curly hair is neatly styled. The serious expression on his face suggests a man deeply engaged in his work, a testament to his prolific output and enduring impact on German literature. Kotzebue's plays, which often dealt with contemporary social issues and featured complex characters, were widely popular both in Germany and beyond. His most famous works include "The Stranger," "The Seducer," and "The Robbers," which continue to be performed and studied today. Despite his literary success, Kotzebue's life was not without controversy. In 1819, he was assassinated by a young student named Karl Ludwig Sand, who was driven to act out of a misguided sense of revenge. The event shocked Europe and cast a dark shadow over Kotzebue's legacy. This print offers a glimpse into the life of a man who left an indelible mark on German literature, and serves as a reminder of the complex and often tumultuous relationship between art and life.
