EDITORS COMMENTS
Anna Elisabeth Liliane Schonemann (1799-1868), also known as Lili Schonemann, was one of many women who captured the heart of the renowned German poet and statesman, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Goethe, who was known for his complex personal life and numerous romantic entanglements, met Schonemann in Weimar in 1816 when she was just a young girl. Despite her youth, Goethe was deeply impressed by her intelligence, wit, and beauty. Schonemann, who was born into a wealthy family, was known for her independent spirit and strong will. She was not interested in being just another one of Goethe's many admirers and instead chose to marry the wealthy banker, Karl von Durckheim, in 1823. The marriage was a happy one, and Schonemann went on to have six children with her husband. Despite her decision to marry, Schonemann remained close friends with Goethe throughout her life. She was a frequent visitor to Weimar, and the two continued to correspond regularly. Goethe even dedicated several poems to Schonemann, including "To Lili," which he wrote in 1816. Schonemann's life was not without tragedy. Her husband died in 1859, and she was left to raise their six children on her own. She continued to be an influential figure in Weimar society, however, and was known for her salon, where many prominent intellectuals and artists gathered to discuss literature, art, and politics. This photograph captures Schonemann in her later years, with her warm smile and expressive eyes. Despite the many challenges she faced throughout her life, she remained a strong and independent woman, who continued to inspire those around her with her intelligence, wit, and beauty.
