EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Triple Treat of Renaissance Instruments: Archlute, Mandolin, and Mandola" 2.. This copperplate engraving, created by John Lee and based on a drawing by T. Webster, is an exquisite representation of three Renaissance musical instruments: the archlute (1), mandolin (2), and mandola (3). Originating from the pages of Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature, published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown in London in 1820, this engraving offers a glimpse into the rich history of music and its instruments. 3. The archlute (1), the central instrument in this composition, is a plucked stringed instrument with a distinctive bowed base. Its shape resembles that of a lute, but it features a neck that extends beyond the soundbox, allowing for the use of a bow on the lower strings. This adaptation enabled the archlute to produce a more resonant and powerful sound than its lute counterpart. 4. To the left of the archlute, a mandolin (2) rests, its delicate body adorned with intricate carvings. Known for its distinctive eight-stringed configuration and pear-shaped body, the mandolin is a versatile instrument capable of producing a bright, clear tone. 5. Completing the trio is the mandola (3), a larger version of the mandolin. With its elongated neck and deeper, resonant sound, the mandola offers a richer, fuller tone than its smaller sibling. 6. This enchanting image not only serves as a testament to the beauty and craftsmanship of these historical instruments but also invites us to explore the depth and diversity of music throughout history.
