EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stern yet thoughtful visage of Archibald Campbell Tait (1811-1882), a prominent Scottish clergyman and theologian of the Victorian era. Tait, who is depicted here in his later years, was a prolific writer and a vocal opponent of the Oxford Movement, a religious reformist group that sought to reintroduce certain Roman Catholic practices into the Church of England. Born in Edinburgh, Tait studied at the University of Edinburgh and went on to become a minister in the Church of Scotland. However, he eventually left the Scottish Church to join the Church of England, where he rose through the ranks to become the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1868. Tait's opposition to the Oxford Movement made him a controversial figure in his time. He believed that the movement's emphasis on tradition and ritual threatened the Protestant nature of the Church of England. Tait's writings on theology and religious issues were widely read and influential, and he played a key role in shaping the theological debates of the Victorian era. Despite his controversial stance, Tait was respected for his intellectual rigor and his commitment to the Church. He was known for his strong moral character and his dedication to pastoral care. This photograph, with its solemn expression and serious gaze, captures the intensity and depth of Tait's religious convictions and his unwavering commitment to his faith.
