EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing image captures the daring and audacious Marquis de Bacqueville as he makes an attempt to fly across the Seine River in Paris during the year 1742. Dressed in a bulky, bird-like contraption, the Marquis appears confident and determined as he takes off from the riverbank, surrounded by a curious crowd. With the help of several assistants, he manages to achieve initial success and soars above the water, much to the amazement of onlookers. However, the elation of the moment is short-lived, as the Marquis encounters unexpected difficulties during his flight. The complex machinery of his flying machine begins to malfunction, causing him to lose altitude and eventually plummet into the river. In a tragic turn of events, he lands on a passing boat, causing it to capsize and resulting in a broken leg. Despite the unfortunate outcome, the Marquis' audacious attempt to fly across the Seine became a sensation and was widely reported in the press of the time. The incident served as a reminder of the allure and danger of human ambition, as well as the limits of technology in the 18th century. This image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the impossible seemed within reach and the boundaries of human achievement were constantly being pushed.
