This evocative photograph captures the intensity and determination of the Battle of Burqa in Palestine during the First World War. The image shows members of the 264th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (RFA), expertly maneuvering their 18-pounder guns during the battle on November 12, 1917. The 52nd Division, to which the 264th Brigade belonged, had been tasked with capturing Burqa from the Ottoman forces. The successful outcome of this battle was a significant turning point in the Middle East campaign of the war. The RFA soldiers are seen here in the midst of action, with their guns mounted on wheeled carriages. The guns, each weighing over 900 pounds, were a formidable weapon during this era of warfare.
