EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Behanzin, the former King of Dahomey, is seen in exile in Algeria. Born in 1844, Behanzin, also known as Bihuazin, ascended to the throne of Dahomey in 1889 following the death of his father, Glele. He assumed the throne under the name Kondo but later changed it to Behanzin, which means "the one who crushes enemies." Behanzin was the last independent ruler of Dahomey, a kingdom located in present-day Benin, West Africa. His reign marked a significant period in the history of Dahomey as he led the national resistance during the Dahomey War against the French colonial forces. The war, which lasted from 1892 to 1894, ended with the defeat and capture of Behanzin, leading to the colonization of Dahomey by France. After his defeat, Behanzin was exiled to Algeria, where he spent the remainder of his life in obscurity. This photograph, taken around 1900, captures a moment in the life of a once powerful and revered king, now a forgotten figure in history. Behanzin's story is a poignant reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of Africa and its people. The image of the former king, dressed in traditional attire and surrounded by his entourage, evokes a sense of loss and nostalgia for a time long past. The photograph is a testament to the resilience and dignity of a people who, despite the challenges they faced, continued to hold on to their cultural identity and traditions.
