EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor drawing depicts the Crested Kingfisher, Megaceryle lugubris, which is number 4 in a series of 61 avian illustrations from the Himalaya Mountains. The artwork is part of the extensive collection of Lady Mary Bentinck, an influential figure in British colonial India during the early 19th century. The drawing, created in 1833, is currently housed in the Library & Archives of the British Library under the reference Z88 f BEN. The Crested Kingfisher, also known as the Common Kingfisher, is a small, colorful bird belonging to the family Cerylidae and the order Coraciiformes. Native to the Old World, this bird is widely distributed across Asia and parts of Africa. Known for their distinctive crest and vibrant plumage, Kingfishers are renowned for their unique hunting technique. They perch on a branch or submerged stick and wait for their prey to come into sight before diving headfirst into the water to catch it. Lady Mary Bentinck, the daughter of the Duke of Portland, arrived in India in 1805 as the wife of the then Governor-General, the Marquess Wellesley. She was an accomplished artist and naturalist, and her passion for the natural world is evident in this stunning collection of watercolor drawings. The Bentinck Collection is a testament to her dedication to documenting the diverse avian life of the Himalayas during the British colonial era. The intricate details of the Crested Kingfisher's plumage, the subtle shading, and the lifelike representation of its beak and crest are a testament to the artist's skill and expertise. The drawing provides a glimpse into the rich natural history of the Himalayas and offers a fascinating insight into the past, offering a connection to a bygone era.
