EDITORS COMMENTS
The Daring of Diane" is a one-act comic operetta composed by Heinrich Reinhardt, with a libretto adapted by Arthur Anderson from Julius Wilhelm's play "Die Süssen Grisetten." The scene depicted in this photograph is from the Holle Cabaret Theatre production in Vienna, which took place on 1st December 1907. Although the piece was first produced at the Tivoli music hall on 22nd January 1912, Reinhardt had already achieved success in Vienna as an operetta composer. In this image, we see a painter, E.P. Kinsella, capturing the essence of a woman's daring spirit as she poses for him. The woman, dressed in a luxurious fur gown, stands confidently before the artist, her undressed back turned to him. She wears a seductive expression on her face, daring him to capture her true essence. The artist, focused intently on his easel, seems to be in a trance, lost in the moment as he attempts to immortalize her audacious pose. The woman's boldness and confidence are further emphasized by the way she stands, her arms crossed defiantly, her chin tilted upwards, and her hips slightly jutting out. Her pose is both provocative and alluring, inviting the artist to explore the depths of her character. The artist, in turn, seems to be rising to the challenge, his brush strokes becoming more confident and assured as he captures the essence of the woman's daring spirit. This photograph offers a glimpse into the world of Viennese operetta and the artistic process, showcasing the interplay between the model's daring pose and the artist's determination to capture her essence on canvas. The image is a testament to the power of art to capture the human spirit and the daring, fearless nature of the women who inspired it. Date: 1912. Rights Managed from Mary Evans Prints Online.
