This evocative photograph captures the destruction of the Pont de Arches bridge in the Belgian town of Liège during the early days of World War I. As German forces invaded neutral Belgium in August 1914, the Belgian army and citizens put up fierce resistance, delaying the German advance. With time running out, the Belgians were unable to blow up all twelve bridges across the Meuse River before retreating. In this image, we see the aftermath of the destruction of just one bridge – the Pont de Arches. The bridge, a vital strategic point, was destroyed on August 7, 1914, using explosives and artillery fire. The rapid German advance left the Belgians with little choice but to abandon their plans to destroy the other bridges. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the chaotic and devastating beginning of the First World War in Belgium. The image captures the destruction wrought by the conflict, with debris scattered across the riverbank and the bridge's arches crumbling into the Meuse. The photograph is a testament to the historical significance of the events that unfolded in Liège during those fateful days in 1914.
