EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts Duc d'Orleans, Louis-Philippe Joseph (1747-1793), a pivotal figure in the French Revolution. Born into the Bourbon royal family, Duc d'Orleans was a French soldier who displayed a strong affinity towards the revolutionary ideals that would later sweep across France. In the early stages of the Revolution, he adopted the name Philippe Égalité, symbolizing his commitment to the cause of equality. Despite his sympathies, Philippe Égalité was ultimately unable to avoid the violent upheaval that engulfed the country. He was a member of the National Assembly and even served as the President of the Constituent Assembly, but his efforts to moderate the Revolution and prevent the excesses of the radical Jacobins were in vain. In 1793, during the Reign of Terror, Philippe Égalité was arrested and brought to trial on charges of treason. Despite his attempts to defend himself, he was found guilty and sentenced to death by the guillotine. This print captures the tragic end of Philippe Égalité's life, as he is led to the guillotine in a solemn procession. The expression on his face conveys a sense of resignation and acceptance, as he bravely faces the inevitable. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and contradictions of the French Revolution, and the human cost of political upheaval. Philippe Égalité's legacy, however, extends beyond his tragic end. He is best known as the father of Louis-Philippe, who would later become the King of France during the July Monarchy (1830-1848). Despite the circumstances of his father's death, Louis-Philippe would go on to rule France with a more moderate hand, bringing a period of relative stability to the country after the tumultuous Revolution.
