This engraving depicts Pierre-Antoine Du Pont de LETANG (1765-1840), a prominent French military figure who served under King Louis XVII. Du Pont de LETANG was born in Bordeaux, France, and rose through the ranks of the military to become a general. In 1814, during the reign of King Louis XVIII, Du Pont de LETANG was appointed as the Secretary of War, a position he held until 1815. The image captures Du Pont de LETANG in formal attire, wearing the uniform of a French general. He is depicted standing upright, with a stern expression on his face and his hands clasped behind his back. The engraving was produced in Spain, specifically in Madrid, and is part of the extensive collection of the National Library. Du Pont de LETANG's appointment as Secretary of War came at a critical time in French history. The Napoleonic Wars had left France in a state of turmoil, and the country was in need of strong leadership to restore order and stability.
