This striking photograph captures the momentous occasion when the esteemed French playwright, Edmond Rostand, was received into the prestigious Académie Française on December 15, 1903. Rostand, born in Marseille on April 1, 1868, was a prolific and celebrated figure in the French literary world. His plays, which often featured wit, romance, and adventure, were widely popular and continue to be performed and admired to this day. The Académie Française, established in 1635, is France's most prestigious literary institution. Its members, known as immortels, are chosen for their distinguished contributions to French language and literature. Rostand's reception into this esteemed body was a testament to his enduring influence and impact on French culture. In this photograph, Rostand is seen standing proudly before the assembled members of the Académie Française, dressed in formal attire and wearing a sash adorned with the insignia of the institution. The room is filled with an air of solemnity and reverence, as the immortels look on with admiration and respect. The year 1903 was a significant one for Rostand, as he also published his final play, "Le Roi Sage," which was well-received by critics and audiences alike. Tragically, Rostand passed away just two years later, on December 2, 1905, at the age of 37.
