EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of relaxation amidst the adventure and excitement of Edward, Prince of Wales' (later King Edward VIII) hunting expedition in East Africa in 1930. The Prince, dressed in safari attire, sits at a simple bush camp table, sipping tea with two of his companions: Captain Anderson, a renowned elephant hunter (left), and Denys Finch-Hatton, a Danish noblewoman and writer, better known by her pen name Isak Dinesen. The serene scene is set in the picturesque surroundings of Kiu, a region in what is now Kenya. The camaraderie between the Prince and his companions is palpable as they take a break from their big game safari. Finch-Hatton, who would tragically be killed later that year when the Gypsy Moth plane he was flying crashed in Kenya, is seen here in his element, surrounded by the wild beauty of the African bush. The Prince, who would later abdicate the throne in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, was known for his love of adventure and his fascination with Africa. This photograph is a captivating reminder of a bygone era, when the British aristocracy sought thrills and adventure in the exotic lands of Africa. The image, which dates back to 1930, is a testament to the rich history of royalty, hunting, and exploration that continues to intrigue and inspire us today.
