This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Etienne Maurice, Comte Gerard (1773-1852), a renowned French soldier and marshal during the Napoleonic Wars. Born in Lille, Gerard began his military career in the Austrian army before joining the French Revolutionary forces in 1792. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning the moniker "Victor of Wagram" for his decisive victory over the Austrian army in 1809. Gerard's military prowess and unwavering loyalty to Napoleon Bonaparte earned him numerous accolades and promotions. He was made a marshal of the French Empire in 1804, a title he held until his retirement from the military in 1814. After the fall of Napoleon, Gerard served under the Bourbon monarchy and was later appointed governor of Algeria in 1831. This portrait, likely taken during Gerard's later years, showcases his regal bearing and the wisdom that comes with a life of military service.
