EDITORS COMMENTS
"Eva Vliegen, also known as Eva Fliegen or Eva Vlieghe, was a German woman from Meurs who gained notoriety in the early 17th century for her unusual claim to live solely on the scent of flowers. Born around 1575, Vliegen's extraordinary ability was first brought to public attention in 1628 when she was exposed during an investigation by local authorities. Despite the skepticism of many, Vliegen was able to convince her interrogators that she could indeed survive without food by inhaling the fragrances of various flowers. Initially, Vliegen was condemned for her supposed deception and was sentenced to be whipped as a public punishment. However, her story soon gained widespread attention, and many people came to believe in her miraculous abilities. As a result, she was eventually pardoned and even granted a pension by the local rulers, allowing her to continue living in Meurs and continuing to astound onlookers with her seemingly supernatural powers. Despite the fascination and intrigue surrounding Eva Vliegen, there is no concrete evidence to support her claims, and many historians believe that she may have been a fraud. Regardless, her story remains a fascinating example of the strange and unusual beliefs that could capture the imagination of people during this period, and a reminder of the enduring human fascination with the paranormal and the unexplained."
