Agustina de Aragon, also known as Agustina Sarasosa y Domingo (1790-1858), is depicted in this stunning oil on canvas portrait by Lucio Rivas. The Spanish heroine is immortalized in this vertical composition, which hangs in the Army Museum in Madrid, Spain. Agustina de Aragon gained renown during the Peninsular War for her valiant defense of the Portillo de la Almozara in Zaragoza. During the Siege of Zaragoza in 1809, the city was under siege by the French army led by Marshal Jean-Andoche Junot. Agustina, a young and unmarried woman, bravely defended the Portillo, a crucial strategic point, alongside her father and brother.
