EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored lithograph is an exquisite example from Dr. F.A. Schmidt's Petrefactenbuch, published in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1855 by Verlag von Krais & Hoffmann. Dr. Schmidt's Book of Petrification was a groundbreaking work that introduced fossils and palaeontology to both the specialist and general reader. The lithograph showcases a collection of extinct ammonites, ancient mollusks characterized by their spiral shells. Ammonites were once abundant in the seas during the Mesozoic Era, but went extinct around 66 million years ago. The seven species depicted in this print include Ammonites pustulosus, lamberti, complanatus, denticulatus, globulus, euryodos, serratus, dentatus, reineckianus, alternans, klytia, and mandelslohi. Each ammonite is meticulously rendered in vibrant colors, highlighting their intricate, spiraling shells. The lithograph is a testament to the meticulous work of the 19th-century scientific illustrators who painstakingly hand-painted these details onto the lithographic plates. The result is a visually stunning and accurate representation of these extinct marine creatures. Dr. Schmidt's Petrefactenbuch was a significant contribution to the field of palaeontology, providing a detailed record of the fossils known at the time. The publication of this book helped to advance scientific understanding of the natural world and sparked a renewed interest in the study of fossils and the history of life on Earth.
