EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Foundling Hospital Schools in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, circa 1935. The Foundling Hospital, established in 1739 by Captain Thomas Coram, began construction of its first premises at Bloomsbury Fields in London in 1741. Over the years, the Hospital grew and evolved, and in 1926, it moved to new premises at Redhill in Surrey. However, by 1935, the Hospital had once again outgrown its facilities and relocated to a purpose-built school in Berkhamsted. Captain Thomas Coram, a sea captain turned philanthropist, was deeply moved by the plight of abandoned children in London. He founded the Foundling Hospital to provide care and education for these children, and over the course of its history, it cared for over 25,000 children. The Hospital's mission was to give these children a chance at a better life, and the move to Berkhamsted marked a new chapter in the organization's history. The children in this photograph can be seen playing and studying in the school's grounds, surrounded by the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside. The Foundling Hospital Schools in Berkhamsted provided a safe and nurturing environment for children in need, and the move to this new location allowed the organization to continue its vital work for many more years. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the important role that the Foundling Hospital played in the lives of thousands of children over the centuries.
