This portrait captures the enigmatic charm and charisma of Frederick Leverton Harris (1864-1926), a prominent British politician and statesman who graced the political landscape of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Harris served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tynemouth from 1900 to 1906, Stepney from 1907 to 1910, and East Worcestershire from 1914 to 1918. Born in 1864, Harris's political career began in earnest when he was elected as the MP for Tynemouth at the turn of the century. His tenure was marked by his strong advocacy for social reforms and his commitment to improving the lives of the working class. In 1907, he was elected as the MP for Stepney, where he continued his work on social issues, particularly housing and education. However, Harris's political career was not without controversy. In 1910, he was expelled from the Liberal Party for his involvement in the "Coal Scandal," a political crisis that involved bribery and corruption in the coal industry. Despite this setback, Harris was re-elected as the MP for East Worcestershire in 1914 and continued to serve until the end of World War I.
