This evocative photograph captures the raw power and determination of the French military during World War I as they prepare to fire a 400mm railway gun at Ravin d'Harbonnières on the Somme. The Great War, which lasted from 1914 to 1918, saw the deployment of some of the largest and most destructive artillery pieces in history, and the railway guns were among the most formidable of these weapons. The 400mm railway gun, a testament to the ingenuity and industrial might of the time, was a mobile artillery piece mounted on a train. Capable of firing shells weighing up to 1,400 pounds over a distance of 12 miles, these guns could devastate enemy positions from a safe distance.
