This evocative photograph captures the moment of determination and urgency as General Sir William Robertson, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, addresses the crowd at Dalderby, Lincolnshire in October 1916. With the First World War raging in Europe, Robertson had come to this small English town to unveil a new war memorial cross and to make an impassioned plea for more men to enlist in the British Army. Dressed in full military regalia, Robertson stands at the center of the image, facing left, with a solemn expression on his face. Surrounded by local dignitaries and townspeople, he delivers his speech with conviction and gravity. The unveiled cross, a symbol of sacrifice and remembrance, stands proudly to his right.
