This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a fierce dogfight during the First World War, as a German Albatros D.V fighter plane lies crashed in a field, its wings damaged and broken. The pilot, a German airman, is shown lying motionless on the ground nearby, his body limp and lifeless. The scene is a stark reminder of the brutal reality of aerial combat during this period. The German Albatros D.V was a formidable opponent in the skies of the Western Front, feared by Allied pilots for its agility and maneuverability. But in this instance, it was brought down by the skilled hand of Captain Cecil King, MC DFC Croix de Guerre, of the 43 Squadron RAF. The date of this encounter is believed to be between 1917 and 1918. Captain King, a decorated war hero, was known for his bravery and determination in the cockpit. He had earned his Military Cross (MC) and Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his exploits in the air, and the Croix de Guerre for his actions during the Battle of Cambrai.
