EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History published in 1794-1796, showcases three fascinating creatures of the American continent: the Great Anteater (Glyphis giganteus), the Three-banded Armadillo (Tolypeutes tricinctus), and the Short-tailed Manis (M. brevicollis). The Great Anteater, depicted in the center, is the largest anteater species, characterized by its long snout, powerful claws, and elongated, sticky tongue used for feeding on ants and termites. To the left, the Three-banded Armadillo is shown with its distinctive three dark bands running down its back, earning it its name. This armadillo species is also known for its ability to roll into a protective ball when threatened, making it a formidable defense mechanism. On the right, the Short-tailed Manis, also known as the Stink Badger or the Cyclopes, is depicted with its unique appearance. This nocturnal creature has a long, sticky tongue, used for catching insects, and a short, musky tail that emits a foul smell when threatened, deterring potential predators. Ebenezer Sibly, a prolific naturalist, compiled this comprehensive work in five volumes covering the three natural worlds of fauna, flora, and geology. This exquisite illustration, created using the copperplate engraving technique, is a testament to the intricate detail and beauty of the natural world as observed during the late 18th century.
