EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two exotic toucan species, the Green-billed Toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus) and the Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco). The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Naturalisie: Omnithologie" ornithology volume of the "Dictionnaire de Naturalisie: Omnithologie, Insectes, Reptiles et Fishes," published in Paris, France, between 1816 and 1830. The work was directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and engraved by Boure, with the illustrations being painted by Jean Gabriel Pretre. Pretre was a renowned painter of natural history, having previously served as a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo. Later, he became an artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving are a testament to Pretre's skill as an artist and the advanced techniques of the time. The Green-billed Toucan, also known as the Channel-billed Toucan, is native to Central and South America and is easily identified by its bright green bill and red breast. The Toco Toucan, on the other hand, is found in Central and South America and is characterized by its large, colorful bill, which is red at the base and black towards the tip. This engraving is a valuable historical record of these fascinating birds and a testament to the beauty and intrigue they held for naturalists of the past. The work also reflects the importance of natural history during this period and the role it played in the exploration and documentation of the natural world.
