EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative group photograph captures the men of the 1st Reserve Battalion of the London Regiment, Royal Fusiliers, during their training at Blackdown, Farnborough, Hampshire, in May 1918. Amidst the sea of young, determined faces, one cannot help but be drawn to the figure of Albert Auerbach (1894-1918), standing proudly in the third row, third from the left. The uniformity of the soldiers' appearance speaks volumes of the discipline and camaraderie that bound them together in their shared mission. The men, a mix of officers and enlisted men, are all dressed in the distinctive khaki uniform of the Royal Fusiliers, with their berets adorned with the regimental cap badge of the leopard's head. The setting of the photograph, with the houses and buildings of Blackdown in the background, serves as a poignant reminder of the contrast between the mundane and the extraordinary. These men, who just a few months earlier may have been living ordinary lives, were now part of a larger, global conflict that would forever change the course of history. Albert Auerbach, a man of education and ambition, enlisted in the army in 1915, leaving behind his house in London to serve his country. Tragically, he would not live to see the end of the war, as he was killed in action on October 1, 1918, just a few short months after this photograph was taken. This poignant image offers a glimpse into the lives of the men and women who served in the military during the First World War, and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices they made for their country and for future generations.
