This evocative photograph captures a group of French artillerymen, prepared to face the deadly threat of asphyxiating gases during the First World War in 1916. The soldiers, dressed in heavy coats and wearing both masks and helmets, are seen intently loading their weapons, ready to retaliate against the enemy's chemical attacks. The use of poison gas in warfare was a horrifying innovation of the First World War, with both sides employing it to gain an advantage on the battlefield. The gas, often released far from the frontlines, could cause a range of debilitating symptoms, from irritation and burning of the eyes and respiratory system to more severe consequences such as blindness, suffocation, and even death. To counteract this deadly threat, soldiers were issued protective gear, including masks and helmets, to minimize the effects of the gas. The masks, often made of rubber or leather, were designed to filter out the toxic gases, while the helmets provided additional protection against shrapnel and other projectiles. Despite the risks, these brave French artillerymen remained steadfast in their duty, loading their weapons with determination and focus.
