EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored engraving on steel, created by Annedouche after a drawing by Edouard Travies, showcases three distinct and captivating bird species: the Hawfinch, Red Crossbill, and House Sparrow. The image is taken from Richards New Edition of the Complete Works of Comte de Buffon, published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1837. The Hawfinch, represented in the center of the print, is identified by its distinctive red bill and black and white plumage. This bird, scientifically known as Coccothraustes coccothraustes, is a resident breeder in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and is known for its strong beak, which it uses to crack open the hard seeds of various fruits and nuts. To the left of the Hawfinch, the Red Crossbill, or Loxia curvirostra, can be found. This bird is easily recognizable by its distinctive crossed beak, which is adapted for extracting seeds from conifer cones. The Red Crossbill is a resident breeder in the northern forests of Europe, Asia, and North America. The House Sparrow, or Passer domesticus, is depicted perched on a flowerpot to the right of the Hawfinch. This common bird species is native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and has been introduced to other parts of the world. The House Sparrow is easily recognizable by its brown and gray plumage, black and white striped head, and distinctive chirping sound. This beautiful engraving is not only a testament to the skill and artistry of the artists involved, but also a valuable historical document in the field of ornithology. It provides a glimpse into the natural world of the past and showcases the intricate details of these fascinating bird species.
