This evocative photograph captures HMS Iron Duke, a British battleship of the Royal Navy, taking part in the historic Battle of Jutland during the First World War. Launched in 1912, HMS Iron Duke served as the flagship of the Grand Fleet, the powerful British naval force that dominated the North Sea during the conflict. The image, taken on the 31st of May or the 1st of June in 1916, shows the Iron Duke proudly leading the British fleet into battle against the German High Seas Fleet. The Battle of Jutland, also known as the Great Battle of the North Sea, was one of the largest naval engagements of the war and the only major engagement between the two main fleets. The battle took place in the North Sea, off the coast of Denmark, and lasted for over 36 hours. Despite initial German successes, the British ultimately emerged victorious, albeit with heavy losses on both sides. After the war, HMS Iron Duke continued to serve in the Royal Navy, acting as a base ship at Scapa Flow until her decommissioning in 1946.
