HMS Iron Duke leaving Istanbul, Turkey - August 1923

Photograph from the deck of the HMS Marlborough of one of the other Iron-Duke Class Battleships of the British Mediterranean Fleet (the HMS Iron Duke) - which formed the 4th Battle Squadron (with the HMS Benbow and the HMS Emperor of India) - leaving Istanbul for the final time. In August 1923, the Allied Powers turned over Istanbul to the Nationalists, marking the final departure of occupation armies from Anatolia. This card marks the occasion of the Allied Generals handing over the custody of the city at the Dolmabahce Palace. HMS Marlborough was an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, named in honour of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Built at Devonport Royal Dockyard between January 1912 and June 1914 and entered service just prior to First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, Marlborough took part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War (in the Black Sea 191920). She was also involved in the Greco-Turkish War. Date: 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic moment of HMS Iron Duke's departure from Istanbul, Turkey, in August 1923. The Iron Duke, named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy. Built between 1912 and 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard, she entered service just before the outbreak of the First World War and was later assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet. The image, taken from the deck of her sister ship HMS Marlborough, shows HMS Iron Duke leaving Istanbul for the final time. The occasion marked the end of the Allied occupation of Anatolia and the transfer of the city to the Nationalists. The Allied Generals are seen handing over the custody of the city at the Dolmabahce Palace. HMS Iron Duke had a distinguished military career, taking part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920) and the Greco-Turkish War. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the significant role the British Navy played in the political and military history of the region during the early 20th century. The Iron Duke Class Battleships, including HMS Iron Duke and her sisters HMS Benbow and HMS Emperor of India, formed the 4th Battle Squadron of the Mediterranean Fleet. The departure of HMS Iron Duke from Istanbul signified the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in Turkish history.
