The image is accompanied by a poignant message to every Officer, Warrant Officer, Non-Commissioned Officer, and Man under their command, signed by Captain Gilbert Holiday of the Royal Field Artillery. Born in St. Johns Wood, London, Holiday's early life was marked by his proximity to the Royal Horse Artillery, which ignited his fascination with horses. He received his education at Westminster School and went on to study at the Royal Academy Schools. Before joining the military, Holiday worked as an illustrator for various publications, including The Graphic, The Tatler, and The Illustrated London News. In 1914, Holiday enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery as a gunner and was deployed to the Western Front during the First World War. It was during this time that he began to paint, creating many works for army messes. His experiences on the battlefield deeply influenced his art, and he captured the raw emotion and realities of war in his paintings. The horse-drawn transports in this photograph carry the weight of supplies and equipment, essential for the survival of soldiers on the front lines.
