EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving showcases Jean Denis Lanjuinais (1753-1827), a prominent French politician and jurist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in the region of Brittany, Lanjuinais rose to prominence as a lawyer and journalist, utilizing his eloquence and sharp intellect to advocate for progressive political change. During the French Revolution, Lanjuinais served as a deputy in the National Convention and played a pivotal role in drafting the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, which aimed to bring the Catholic Church in France under state control. Despite his revolutionary fervor, Lanjuinais was a moderate voice in the Convention, advocating for the protection of private property and religious freedom. Later in his career, Lanjuinais was appointed as a member of the Council of State and the Court of Cassation, where he continued to shape French law and politics. This engraving, created in 1881 for The Universal History, captures Lanjuinais in the prime of his life, dressed in the formal attire of a contemporary European man of the time. His serious expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of intelligence and determination, reflecting the profound impact he had on French history. As a testament to his enduring legacy, Lanjuinais was later ennobled and became Comte Lanjuinais. His contributions to French law and politics continue to be studied and celebrated, making him an essential figure in the annals of European history.
