EDITORS COMMENTS
John Morley, 1st Viscount Morley of Blackburn (1838-1923), a British Liberal statesman, writer, and newspaper editor, is depicted in this satirical caricature by the renowned political cartoonist, Francis Carruthers Gould, in 1899. The image, titled "The Story of Johnny Head-in-Air (cont.)", captures a moment of political embarrassment and abandonment for Morley as he trips and falls into the river following his less-than-favourable coalition with Sir William Vernon Harcourt. Morley, who was known for his intellectual prowess and eloquence, had long been a close ally and friend of Harcourt. However, their alliance was put to the test when they were forced to form a coalition government with the Liberal Unionists, led by Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, in order to pass key legislation. Morley, who was deeply opposed to the Liberal Unionists, reluctantly agreed to the coalition, much to the dismay of many in his own party. This caricature, which is reminiscent of the popular children's book "Struwwelpeter" by Heinrich Hoffmann, captures the moment of Morley's political downfall. In the image, Morley is shown taking a step forward on a precarious-looking stone step, only to have it give way beneath him, causing him to plunge into the river. Harcourt, who is shown standing on the bank, looks on in amusement, with a smirk on his face and an umbrella in hand. The caption "The Story of Johnny Head-in-Air (cont.)" suggests that this is not the first time Morley has found himself in such a predicament. The image serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of politics and the risks that politicians take when they form alliances with those who may not share their same beliefs or goals.
