EDITORS COMMENTS
John Watts, or 'Jack' as he was affectionately known, was a British flat-race jockey whose impressive career spanned from 1880 to 1900. With a remarkable total of 19 Classic victories under his belt, Watts remains one of the most successful jockeys in the history of horse racing. This photograph, taken in 1887, captures the quiet and unassuming nature of the sportsman. Dressed in the traditional jockey attire of the time, with a red and white striped jersey, black silks, and a black cap adorned with a white rose, Watts exudes a sense of focus and determination. Watts was renowned for his understated style and undemonstrative personality, which contrasted sharply with the flamboyant and boisterous behavior often associated with jockeys. His successes in the Triple Crown events, including the Epsom Derby, the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, and the St. Leger Stakes, were achieved through a combination of skill, experience, and a deep understanding of horses. After retiring from riding in 1900, Watts turned his attention to training, but sadly, his life was cut short when he passed away just two years later. Today, John Watts is remembered as one of the greatest figures in the history of British horseracing, a true sportsman who embodied the spirit of competition and the love of horses. This photograph, a testament to a bygone era, offers a glimpse into the past and the rich history of horse racing in Britain.
