On December 1, 1906, in the small German town of Köpenick, the tables were turned on a man named Wilhelm Voigt, who had gained notoriety and fame for his audacious masquerade as a German officer. For months, Voigt had successfully deceived the townspeople and even the local authorities, ordering them around and collecting taxes under the false pretense of being a high-ranking military officer. But when the real captain of the local militia, D. Langerhaus, Burgomaster of Köpenick, came to investigate, he quickly identified the uniform worn by Voigt as a fake. The scene depicted in this photograph shows the moment of truth in the courtroom, where Voigt stands towards the top right, looking somber and defeated. The judgment against him was swift and severe: he was sentenced to four years in prison for his deception and misrepresentation.
