EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures King Edward VIII (1894-1972) during his tenure as Chief of the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1936. King Edward VIII, also known as the Duke of Windsor after his abdication from the throne, is shown here in full uniform, proudly wearing the RAF cap adorned with the distinctive roundel and the gold braid of his rank as Air Marshal. The stripes on his sleeves denote his previous military rank as a Colonel in the Household Cavalry. King Edward VIII's appointment as Chief of the RAF came shortly after his accession to the throne in 1936, a position he held until his abdication later that year. During his brief reign, he expressed great interest in aviation and even earned his pilot's license. His passion for flying led him to take an active role in the RAF, visiting airfields, meeting with pilots and personnel, and even participating in a few test flights. This photograph is a testament to King Edward VIII's dedication to the RAF and his commitment to supporting the men and women who served in this vital branch of the military. The image captures the regal presence of the monarch, yet also conveys a sense of approachability and enthusiasm for the work of the RAF. The year 1936 was a pivotal moment in British history, and this photograph offers a unique glimpse into the life of a king who chose to serve his country in a most unexpected way.
