EDITORS COMMENTS
L Battery, Royal Horse Artillery: The Valiant Gunners of the Retreat from Mons This evocative print by Fortunino Matania, titled "L Battery, Royal Horse Artillery: The Valiant Gunners of the Retreat from Mons," depicts a pivotal moment during the First World War's opening days. On September 1, 1914, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) was retreating from the Battle of Mons, with the German army hot on their heels. L Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, under the command of Major C.F.M. Brice, was tasked with covering the retreat and holding off the advancing German guns. Faced with overwhelming odds, the gunners of L Battery displayed remarkable courage and determination. They silenced the enemy guns, buying precious time for the retreating British troops to escape. For their heroic actions, three gunners – Trooper Thomas Hood, Trooper James Hulse, and Gunner Thomas Hickman – were posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor. Matania, an accomplished realistic illustrator and artist, captured the intensity and drama of the scene. His wartime work was immensely popular and appeared in nearly every major news magazine, both Allied and neutral, as well as Central Powers publications. With tens of millions of readers witnessing the war through Matania's weekly illustrations, he played an essential role in shaping the public's mental image of what Great War battlefield scenes and soldiers looked like. This powerful print is a testament to the bravery and resilience of the L Battery gunners and serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the early days of the First World War.
