EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enquiring mind and intellectual curiosity of Bernhard-Germain-Étienne de Lacepède (1756-1825), a renowned French naturalist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Cognac, Charente, Lacepède's passion for natural history was ignited during his childhood, spending hours observing the flora and fauna of the surrounding countryside. His formal education began at the Jesuit College in Angoulême, where he studied mathematics, physics, and philosophy. However, it was his self-directed studies in natural history that truly set him apart. In 1781, Lacepède was appointed as the curator of the Natural History Museum in Bordeaux, a position he held for over 30 years. During this time, he made significant contributions to the fields of zoology, ornithology, and ichthyology. One of his most notable achievements was the discovery and description of several new species, including the forest kangaroo (Dendrolagus inustus) and the Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii). Lacepède's groundbreaking work on the classification of marine fish led to the establishment of the journal Annales des Sciences Naturelles, which he edited for over 20 years. This striking image, taken from Mary Evans Prints Online, immortalizes Lacepède's intellectual prowess and dedication to the natural world. With a keen gaze and an air of authority, he embodies the spirit of exploration and discovery that characterized the Age of Enlightenment. As a testament to his enduring legacy, Lacepède's name is still synonymous with the natural history of Bordeaux and beyond.
