EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Lady Delves Broughton, a renowned naturalist and explorer, is seen boarding an Imperial Airways aeroplane at Croydon Airport in 1931, marking the beginning of her expedition to the Belgian Congo. With a determined expression and a steamer trunk at her side, Lady Broughton is prepared for the long journey ahead. Her mission was to obtain accurate details for a new group showing the Eastern gorilla in the Natural History Museum at South Kensington. The display, which had already been mounted by Rowland Ward, was incomplete without the necessary plant specimens and photographs of the gorillas themselves. Lady Broughton had previously visited Kisumu to explore the gorilla forests near Lake Kivu, but she knew that more research was needed to fully understand and document these magnificent creatures. The year was 1931, and air travel was still a novelty. The sight of a woman in a hat and coat, boarding an Imperial Airways plane at Croydon Airport, would have been a remarkable one for onlookers. The aeroplane, with its sleek design and powerful engines, represented the latest in aviation technology. Lady Broughton's flight to Africa was not only a personal adventure but also a significant contribution to scientific knowledge. Her expedition would help advance our understanding of the Eastern gorilla and its habitat, leaving a lasting legacy in the annals of natural history.
