EDITORS COMMENTS
This painting, titled "The Cedars of Lebanon," is a masterpiece by the renowned Victorian artist, Edward Lear. The scene depicts a serene and picturesque landscape, featuring a grove of majestic cedar trees, their long, lush branches reaching towards the sky. The painting is believed to be a later version of an earlier work created by Lear in 1861, which was commissioned by Charles Roundell, a prominent British MP. The cedar trees in this painting were once part of the beautiful grounds of Oatlands Park Hotel, located in Weybridge, Surrey. The oldest tree in the grove was reputed to have been imported from the Lebanon, making it a rare and precious addition to the English landscape. The tree was planted to commemorate the birth of a prince, with some sources claiming it was planted in honor of Prince Henry, the son of King James I, while others suggest it was planted to celebrate the birth of the 1st Duke of Gloucester, who was born at Oatlands. The painting captures the essence of the Victorian era, with its attention to detail and appreciation for the natural world. The use of oil paint adds depth and texture to the trees, bringing the scene to life and transporting the viewer to a peaceful and idyllic setting. The painting is a testament to Lear's skill as an artist and his ability to capture the beauty and majesty of nature. This painting is a precious piece of historical art, reflecting the rich history of Oatlands Park and the significance of the cedar trees in the grounds. It is a reminder of a bygone era, when the natural world was celebrated and cherished, and when art was used to capture and preserve the beauty of the world around us.
