EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken on 16 March 1957, captures the London Fire Brigade's (LFB) Dennis D61 dual-purpose pump proudly displayed in the Brigade's headquarters drill yard. The Dennis D61, a diesel-powered engine, was a vital addition to the LFB's fleet during the 1950s. The side-mounted pump outlets, hose-reel tubing, and two hook ladders are clearly visible in the image. The pump's versatility made it an essential piece of equipment for the Brigade, as it could be used for both firefighting and rescue operations. The London County Council (LCC) ordered the Dennis D61 pumps in the late 1940s and early 1950s as part of a modernization program for the LFB. These pumps replaced many of the older, horse-drawn vehicles that had been in use for decades. The Dennis D61 was a significant improvement, offering greater maneuverability, power, and efficiency than its predecessors. The image of the D61 pump on display in the LFB headquarters drill yard provides a glimpse into the history of firefighting in London during the 1950s. The bell on the pump can be seen in the foreground, adding to the nostalgic feel of the photograph. The Dennis D61 pumps remained in service with the LFB until the late 1970s, when they were gradually replaced by more modern vehicles. This photograph is a reminder of the important role that these vehicles played in protecting the people and property of London during a critical period in the Brigade's history.
