EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment during the Crystal Palace fire in 1936, as His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent (left) pays a visit to the scene of the devastating blaze. Accompanied by the Chairman of the London County Council Fire Committee (centre) and London Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer, Major Morris (right), the Duke shows his support for the brave firefighters working tirelessly to contain the inferno. The Crystal Palace, a landmark Victorian structure located in Sydenham, South London, had been engulfed in flames since the early hours of November 30, 1936. The fire, which would continue to burn for five days, destroyed the iconic glass and iron palace and left thousands of people homeless. As the fire raged on, the Duke of Kent, who was the Honorary Colonel of the London Fire Brigade, felt compelled to visit the scene and offer his encouragement to the firefighters. In this image, he is seen conversing with Major Morris and the Chairman of the London County Council Fire Committee, demonstrating his solidarity with the emergency services personnel. Soon after this photograph was taken, Major Morris led the Duke off to put on protective clothing, allowing him to get a closer look at the firefighting operations. The Duke spent time speaking with the firefighters and inspecting some of the seventy pumps that were being used to tackle the blaze. This poignant moment served as a testament to the Duke's appreciation for the heroic efforts of the London Fire Brigade during this trying time. This photograph, taken in the later stages of the Crystal Palace fire, offers a unique glimpse into the collaboration between the Royal Family, local authorities, and emergency services during a significant historical event. The image is a poignant reminder of the resilience and unity displayed by the British people in the face of adversity.
