EDITORS COMMENTS
During the intense and prolonged air raids of the Second World War, London's fire services faced an unprecedented challenge in fighting the vast swathe of fires that swept through the city during the Blitz. In response, the London County Council (LCC) and the London Fire Brigade (LFB) developed innovative solutions to supplement the available mains water supply for firefighting. One such solution was the use of Dam Units, which carried a 5,000 gallon collapsible dam that could be erected and filled with water in strategic locations from water supplies that might have been laid for considerable distances. This photograph, taken in the 1940s, shows an LFB Dam Unit and trailer pump. The Dam Unit, with its distinctive blue and white stripes, is hitched to the back of a 2nd engine vehicle. The trailer pump, mounted on the bed of the trailer, is ready to be deployed to pump water from the dam into the firefighting appliances. The firemen, dressed in their protective gear, stand by, prepared to set up the dam and begin filling it with water. The Dam Units proved to be invaluable during the war, providing emergency water supplies in areas where the mains water had been damaged or cut off due to bombing. The collapsible dams could be quickly erected and filled, allowing the fire services to respond effectively to the numerous fires that threatened London's homes and businesses. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the vital role that the London Fire Brigade played during the Second World War, and the innovative solutions they developed to meet the unique challenges of the time. It is a testament to the bravery and resourcefulness of the firefighters who risked their lives to protect London during the Blitz.
