EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the elegance and sophistication of Lord and Lady Derwent, painted by the renowned British photographer Madame Yevonde in 1930. Lady Derwent, born Sabine Czaykowska, was the daughter of General Iliesco, the former Chief of Staff of the Romanian Army, and Madame Iliesco of 12, Rue Alexandre, Lahovary, Bucharest. Her husband, Lord Derwent, succeeded his uncle as the third peer in 1920, making their family seat Hackness Hall in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England, the ancestral home of the Derwent family. Madame Yevonde's artistic vision is beautifully showcased in this mirror reflection portrait, which adds an enchanting dimension to the image. The aristocratic couple is depicted in formal attire, exuding an air of refinement and class that was synonymous with the upper echelons of society during the 1930s. The intricate details of their clothing and accessories, along with the ornate background, further emphasize their high social standing. As the daughter of a prominent military figure and the wife of a British peer, Lady Derwent's upbringing was steeped in tradition and etiquette. Her heritage and connections to European nobility added an allure to her persona, making her an intriguing subject for Madame Yevonde's camera. This portrait is a testament to the photographer's ability to capture the essence of her subjects, immortalizing their stories and legacy for generations to come.
