EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the year 1907, presents a striking image of a Sakalava militiaman and his wife in the port city of Antsiranana, Madagascar, formerly known as Diego-Suarez. The militiaman, dressed in his military uniform, stands proudly with his chest puffed out, holding a rifle at the ready. His traditional red and white checkered headpiece adorns his head, signifying his Sakalava ethnicity and membership in the local militia. His wife, dressed in the colorful and intricately patterned clothing typical of the Sakalava people, stands beside him, her hands folded demurely in front of her. Her expression is one of pride and support for her husband, as she gazes up at him with a loving and admiring look. The backdrop of the photograph is a bustling harbor scene, with ships anchored in the distance and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean stretching out behind them. The image offers a glimpse into the lives of the Sakalava people during the early 20th century, a time when European colonialism was beginning to take hold in Madagascar. The Sakalava militia played an important role in the defense of the city and its people during this period, as well as in maintaining law and order within their communities. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich cultural heritage and resilience of the Sakalava people, who continue to thrive in the beautiful and diverse land of Madagascar today.
