EDITORS COMMENTS
This lantern slide image presents a pivotal moment during the Mahdist War in Sudan, specifically the daring rescue of Sir Charles Gordon in 1884. The British General, a renowned figure in the Sudan Campaign, had been besieged in Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan, by the Mahdist forces led by the Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad. In the photograph, a British relief force, consisting of soldiers, is depicted aboard a ship, steaming towards an island with determination and urgency. The island, located on the White Nile River, was believed to be the last known location of Sir Charles Gordon before his capture. The soldiers, armed and ready, are focused on their mission to rescue the beleaguered General and bring him back to safety. The Mahdist War, also known as the Sudanese War or the Mahdist Rebellion, lasted from 1881 to 1889, and was a significant conflict between the Mahdist forces and the British Empire over control of Sudan. The war began when the Mahdi declared a holy war against the Egyptian and Ottoman rule of Sudan, and culminated in the Battle of Omdurman, where the Mahdist forces were defeated by the British. The rescue of Sir Charles Gordon was a turning point in the war, as it boosted morale and galvanized support for the British cause. The eventual victory of the British in the Mahdist War paved the way for the establishment of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, which lasted until 1956.
