EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie-Louise of Austria (1791-1847), the second wife of Napoleon I, is depicted in this poignant photograph taken during the last year of her life. Born in Vienna as Archduchess Marie-Louise Amalie Elisabeth of Austria, she was the eldest daughter of Emperor Leopold II and Emperor Francis I of Austria. In 1810, at the age of 18, Marie-Louise was married to Napoleon Bonaparte, then the Emperor of the French, in a grand ceremony held in the Palace of Fontainebleau. The union was intended to strengthen Napoleon's claim to the Austrian throne and to secure peace between France and Austria. Marie-Louise's marriage to Napoleon was a tumultuous one. She was deeply unhappy in her new role as Empress and longed for her family and homeland. Napoleon, who was deeply in love with his first wife, Josephine, found it difficult to be faithful to Marie-Louise. Despite this, the couple had three children together: Napoléon II, Marie-Amélie, and Marie-Thérèse. After Napoleon's defeat in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Marie-Louise and her family were exiled to Austria. She spent the rest of her life in Vienna, where she was beloved by her people. In this photograph, Marie-Louise appears as a mature and dignified woman, with a thoughtful expression on her face. Her dark hair is styled in the fashion of the time, and she wears a simple yet elegant dress. The photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a woman who played a significant role in European history, yet is often overshadowed by her more famous husband. Marie-Louise's story is a reminder of the complexities of history and the human experiences that lie behind the grand narratives. This photograph, taken in the last year of her life, offers a poignant and intimate portrait of a woman who lived through turbulent times and left a lasting legacy.
