Mary Whitefoord Lee, nee Sidney (circa 1800), was a prolific writer and an intriguing figure of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In this portrait, Mary, then known as Mrs. Lee, is depicted with a thoughtful expression and an air of refinement. At the time of this photograph, Mary had already lived an eventful life. She was previously married to Caleb Whitefoord, a prominent figure in the East India Company, with whom she had several children. After Caleb's death, Mary remarried and became the wife of the Reverend William Lee. Her literary career began to flourish during this period, and she authored several notable works, including "Pilgrims of the Sun" and "The History of the Island of Ceylon." Her writings provided valuable insights into the lives of the people of Ceylon and the broader context of British colonialism during the time. Mary's works were published during a time when women's voices were not often heard in the literary world.
