EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases the renowned comic opera singer, Achille Ricquier, in the role of the Duke of Popoli from the popular comic opera "La Sirene" (The Siren) by Daniel Auber and Eugene Scribe. Performed at the Theatre Royal de l'Opéra Comique in Paris in 1844, Ricquier's portrayal of the Duke brought laughter and delight to audiences. The image, an illustration by Victor Dollet from the Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Théâtres de Paris, captures the essence of the Duke's character with his exaggerated facial expressions and flamboyant attire. Dressed in the regal costume of the Duke, complete with a grand cape and a scepter in hand, Ricquier embodies the pompous and self-important nobleman. The setting of the opera is a charming pastoral scene, with the Duke standing before a serene lake, surrounded by lush greenery and picturesque scenery. The Siren, a mythological creature, is depicted in the background, luring sailors to their doom with her enchanting song. However, in this production, the Siren takes on a comedic role, adding to the lighthearted and entertaining atmosphere of the opera. The lithograph, published in 1845 by Louis Lasalle, offers a glimpse into the world of 19th-century French opera and the art of comic performance. Achille Ricquier's portrayal of the Duke of Popoli in "La Sirene" was not only a critical success but also a testament to his exceptional talent as a bass-bouffe (comic bass) singer. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithograph serves as a lasting reminder of his remarkable stage presence and the enduring appeal of the comic opera genre.
